Saturday was a huge day for Fairbanks athletics. UAF hockey got its first win of the season, Lathrop punched its ticket to the state championship football game, and the West Valley boys won state in cross country.
What shouldn’t be lost in the shuffle is that the University of Alaska volleyball team pulled off an enormous upset win against one of the best teams in the country.
The Nanooks, fresh off a three-set sweep of Northwest Nazarene, hosted the Central Washington Wildcats on Saturday. The Wildcats were the number two team in the GNAC and the #25 team in the country. By the end of Saturday, however, the Wildcats were on the losing end of a 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22 game won by the Nanooks.
The ‘Nooks are now 13-7 overall, 6-2 in the GNAC and 7-1 at home. UAF had 71 kills to 43 for CWU and a .286 hit percentage compared to the Wildcats’ .164.
Sophie Schilling led the Nanooks with 19 kills while Karli Nielson had 18. Emily Moorhead (10 kills, six blocks), Cate Whiting (55 assists, 10 digs), Dani Dodge (10 assists, 13 digs) and Miya Ohms (21 digs) all had outstanding games as well.
The ‘Nooks will play just one game this week as they visit the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday. After the win they got Saturday, the ‘Nooks could very well be the ranked team playing by that time.
