After an up and down start to the season, the University of Alaska Fairbanks opened GNAC play by doing what they’ve been doing a lot of recently: winning.
Karli Nielson had 13 kills, Katie Whiting had 31 assists, and the UAF Nanooks volleyball team won their fourth game in a row with a 3-0 road sweep of the Western Oregon Wolves Thursday night. The final score was 25-17, 26-24, 25-17 with the defense being led by Dani Dodge’s 23 digs as the ‘Nooks moved to 8-5 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
In the beginning of the year the ‘Nooks would follow up every win with a loss until they found themselves sitting at 4-5 last Friday after opening their home tournament with a loss to Cal State LA. Since then, all they’ve done is win with four straight victories, including two sweeps.
In addition to the strong play of Dodge, Nielson and Whiting, the Nanooks got solid play out of Sophie Schilling (8 kills, .389 hitting percentage), Lahra Weber (12 digs), Emily Moorhead (two solo-blocks, six block-assists) and AveRee Reynolds (seven block-assists).
UAF will play again on Saturday against the St. Martin’s Saints at 4:15 AKDT.
