It was a successful weekend for the Monroe Catholic Rams. It was a weekend of improvement for the Hutchison Hawks. Most of all, it was an excellent weekend for volleyball.

The Rams hosted Galena on Friday and Saturday while the Hawks traveled to Bethel for a tournament. Monroe had no trouble taking both games against Galena and while Hutchison may have lost the match, they were able to do claim a major milestone on their season.

First, the Rams. Monroe claimed victory on Friday by a score of 25-6, 25-6, 25-8. Casey Elterman and Delaney Ott tied for the team lead with seven kills a piece, Brityn Ward led the way with six aces, Cayla Hernandez had 19 assists, and there was a three way tie for the team lead in digs at three a piece for Ward, Ott, and Jane Menard.

Day two, things were just as easy. The Rams won 25-10, 25-7, and 25-4 for the sweep. It’s the fourth consecutive win for the Rams since the West Valley Invite two weeks ago.

Elterman was electric with nine aces while Ott was outstanding with six kills. Hernandez led the way once more with 16 assists while Ott also led the team with 5 digs.

As for Hutchison, they traveled to the Bethel tournament and faced ACS in their first game. Once again, the Hawks lost the match, but for the first time this season, they claimed victory in a set as they fell 3-2 by a score of 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-6.

The two sets won were two more than the Hawks recorded all season before Friday and they nearly came away with the win against an Anchorage school. That alone should show just how far Hutchison has come.

North Pole hosted Delta on Friday while West Valley traveled to Anchorage for a tournament. Results were not available for any of their games at press time.
