Prior to Wednesday, there’d already been seven high school football games either postponed or canceled due to Covid this season. Now, the strangest schedule adjustment of the year has taken place.
The Ben Eielson Ravens were scheduled to take on the Monroe Catholic Rams on Saturday evening for Monroe’s homecoming and Senior Night. However, that won’t be happening now as the Ravens have forfeited the game due to contact tracing, injuries, and disciplinary reasons.
The game will still be played, however. In order to allow Monroe the opportunity for homecoming and senior night, the Lathrop junior varsity team will serve as Monroe’s opponent instead. The game will still be played at 6 at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.
As a result of the forfeit, Eielson remains winless on the year. Monroe now moves to 4-1 overall. Had the game been canceled outright, it would’ve been the third week in a row Monroe didn’t play. Their game against Barrow last week was canceled due to Barrow’s school going remote. The Rams were off for a previously scheduled bye the week before that.
The game will not count in the win-loss column. For Lathrop, it give the JV experience against one of the best teams in Division III while also allowing Monroe seniors their special night. For Monroe, it gives them a chance to stay fresh before their final regular season game against Valdez while ensuring homecoming and senior night still occurs.
This will be the second Eielson game this season to be canceled after they were unable to play Seward week two due to positive Covid tests on the Seahawks roster. West Valley has had two separate games canceled due to Covid related reasons, North Pole had one game canceled and another rescheduled due to a positive Covid test and a third game rescheduled due to positive Covid tests on Kodiak.
For now, Lathrop and North Pole will play a varsity game Thursday night at North Pole at 7 p.m., West Valley will host Kodiak on Friday at 7 p.m., and Monroe will host the Lathrop JV at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
