Letter to the Editor

Trump's border wall

To the editor: President Trump declared a phony national emergency to justify taking money from hundreds of Defense Department projects, including some in Alaska, to pay for construction of his wall project. The worst thing that can happen now is for Congress to authorize a dime to refund those projects. If Congress restores funding, it will have ceded the power of the purse to the president. This was one of the key rights assigned to the legislative branch in the Magna Carta and preserved in Article I of our Constitution.

Predictably, Senator Sullivan and Congressman Whatshisname, the guy we hear from every two years, both blame the Democrat-controlled House for not funding the wall in the first place. Nope, sorry boys, Congress thought it was a stupid idea, as it is, and refused to provide funding. Don’t you dare blame the Democrats for treating our taxpayer dollars with respect.
