Deadline to comment on Pebble Mine is today

June 28

To the editor: Please be aware that 5:00 p.m. today is the deadline to submit comments on the second proposed Pebble Mine. Online, it might only take a few minutes. Many people thought the mine wouldn’t be built, but that is not the case. The project is moving forward and a second Pebble Mine proposal is in the works.

There have been thousands of sound and logical objections to the Pebble Mine in the Bristol Bay, but the bottom line for many is the danger to Alaska’s greatest renewable resource, salmon.

Salmon runs all over the world have been depleted or ruined and their recovery has been marginal, if at all. The Bristol Bay Salmon resource is the last great salmon spawning ground and run in the world. This resource belongs to all Alaskans and Alaskans have spoken. From letters to the editor to statewide election, Alaskans have said “no” to risking an irreplaceable resource, our salmon. Alaska Natives have made their views clear. Most believe the risk to culture and subsistence is not acceptable.

Please do not be put off by the opening information that suggests you must have substantive comments for specific areas of concern or damage. That is not appropriate to expect. If you have basic comments that convey your opinion/reasoning, that is sufficient and you should submit. None of us knows all the details that could be included. We don’t know all the plans and no plan can guarantee the safety of our salmon.

Please submit your comment online at Pebble Project EIS at or mail comments to Program Manager, Regulatory Division U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, PO Box 6898, Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, AK 99506-0898.
