FAIRBANKS — The University of Alaska Anchorage’s Mat-Su campus has been hit by a data breach, according to a University of Alaska news release Tuesday. Several months ago, an unknown hacker or hackers used employee credentials to gain access to a server where sensitive student information such as transcripts, financial aid information addresses and phone numbers were stored.
The university conducted a forensic investigation and found no evidence that anyone has used or tried to use information exposed by the data breach.
There were about 5,416 names and Social Security numbers on the system compromised. All were Mat-Su campus students or staff members.
Oregon-based company ID Experts sent letters to those who had data exposed, explaining the breach and offering identify theft protection and insurance for fraudulent expenditures caused by the breach.
