Alaska lucky charm

A bald eagle perches above the Chena River under brilliant blue skies in this photo taken by Colleen Sackinger. She wrote, "An Alaskan lucky charm! I spotted my first bald eagle of the season along the Chena River on St. Patrick's Day."

FAIRBANKS -- Remember last week's bone-chilling cold? We don't either. Temperatures topped 40 degrees above zero Wednesday for the second day, soaring to 47 degrees under sunny skies in Fairbanks.

That's just shy of the record high of 50, set in 1981. The normal high in Fairbanks is 26 and the normal low is minus 2.
