Fatal accident

A 17-year-old driver was killed Monday evening after his car collided with a commercial tanker truck on Chena Hot Springs Road, authorities said.

The crash happened around 5:26 p.m. near Mile 2 of Chena Hot Springs Road, according to Alaska State Troopers.

A pickup truck driven by the 17-year-old was traveling east on Chena Hot Springs Road when it crossed the center line and crashed into a Pioneer Wells water truck traveling west, according to Alaska State Trooper Public Information Officer Austin McDaniel. The teen was declared dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported and both occupants were wearing seat belts, according to troopers.

The Pioneer Wells truck was severely damaged and caught fire as a result of the collision. It does not appear that the commercial vehicle was at fault based on a preliminary investigation, McDaniel said. The driver was working at the time of the incident.

The crash closed the roadway for more than five hours. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, however, troopers do not believe drugs or alcohol to be a factor at this time.

The name of the teen has not yet been released.
