Spc. Marquise Elliott of North Carolina was killed Friday, June 14, 2019 in a vehicle accident during a training exercise southeast of Fort Wainwright during a Red Flag exercise in the Yukon Training Area. He was assigned to the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.

A soldier from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage died and another was injured Friday when the Humvee they were riding in rolled over in the Yukon Training Area southeast of Fort Wainwright.

The vehicle's driver, Spc. Marquise Gabriel Elliott, 25, was treated at the scene by medics and transported by military helicopter to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:23 p.m., according to a Monday morning news release from U.S. Army Alaska.

The injured soldier was treated at the scene and returned to duty.

Elliott was assigned to B Battery, 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. The injured soldier is in the same unit.

The two were in an "up-armored" Humvee when the accident occurred at about 3 p.m. Friday, according to the Army Alaska statement. The vehicle has heavier armor than its military predecessor and has a heavier chassis and improved engine to handle the added weight.

The accident occurred during the first of this year's two Red Flag training exercises, which involve units from multiple military branches. The first exercise began June 6 and is scheduled to end June 22. The second exercise is scheduled for Aug. 1-16. 

Elliott of Charlotte, North Carolina, joined the Army in October 2015 and was assigned to Alaska in April 2016. He deployed to Afghanistan with the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division from September 2017 to May 2018.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
