Looking south across the Chena River, this circa 1930s photo captures the river breakup. This was the site on the river where guessers constructed a tripod on the ice with a line attached to the bridge. The Chena Ice Classic was a annual event with people guessing when the ice would go out and trip the tripod. The Northern Commercial Company power plant stacks are visible behind there store.
