Fairbanks Folk Fest has partnered with The Folk School to create a series of workshops this winter.

They are kicking off the season with an Appalachian styles workshop. Attendees will learn about Appalachian folk music styles, such as old-time, contra dance, country and bluegrass. Through both lecture and listening examples, you will learn to distinguish different folk music styles by ear, and gain an understanding of the history, culture, impact and current state of each.

This first class will be from 4-6:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Fairbanks Folk School in Pioneer Park, 2300 Airport Way, Cabin 66, in Fairbanks. In-person attendees are required to show proof of vaccination and wear a mask. It will also be offered virtually through Zoom. A link will be provided after registration. Please register at least two days before the class begins.

This course is intended for music listeners as well as musicians. No prior experience or equipment is needed. Register at for $25.
