FAIRBANKS—A pickup truck fatally struck a woman walking in traffic on the Richardson Highway near North Pole late Friday, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The woman was wearing dark clothing and walking in the right-hand lane of the two northbound lanes of traffic when the Ford F-350 hit her shortly before midnight near 352.5 Mile, according to troopers. The area has no streetlights, troopers stated in a news release Saturday.

Troopers released the identity of the victim, Verna Beattus, 48, of Fairbanks, after notifying her family.

The driver of the truck, Fairbanks resident James Sullivan, 65, told troopers he looked away from the road to check his left-side mirror as a vehicle was passing him in the left northbound lane. He said he then felt and heard an impact.

A witness told troopers the victim appeared to have been intoxicated.

Troopers said the investigation is continuing.
