FAIRBANKS — Goaltender Matt Taylor recorded his fourth straight shutout and the West Valley Wolfpack downed the Chugiak Mustangs 3-0 in Thursday’s nonconference boys high school hockey game at the Harry J. McDonald Memorial Center in Eagle River.
“He’s playing with a lot of confidence, and I think it’s a really big asset for a goaltender to be able to see the puck. He’s making the first stop and it allows our defense to clear any rebounds,” West Valley head coach Wayne Sawchuk, during a telephone interview, said of Taylor’s 20-save performance in the opener of the three-game trip in Southcentral Alaska.
The Wolfpack, 7-1-0 overall, scored three different ways following a scoreless first period against the Mustangs of the Cook Inlet Conference.
Stoshie Skorulski scored on a power play at 53 seconds into the second period, assisted by Ty Munson and Eric Weber. Chris Nicolai, aided by Mike Olson, produced a shorthanded goal at 12:30 of the second.
Casey Lewandowski assured the win at 11:07 with helpers from Logan Arpino and Taylor Sawchuk.
Also Thursday, West Valley’s junior varsity tied the South Anchorage Wolverines 1-1 at the McDonald Center.
The West Valley varsity team faces the Service Cougars at 6:30 tonight at Ben Boeke Arena in Anchorage and the Wolfpack return to the McDonald Center at
