FAIRBANKS — The West Valley Wolfpack won four out of five finals in cruising to victory in the Region VI Tennis Championships on Saturday at the Dan Ramras Community Tennis Courts.
West Valley won titles in boys singles, girls singles, girls doubles and mixed doubles. The only match the Wolfpack didn’t win was in boys doubles, where the Monroe Catholic Rams came through with an upset win.
All of the regional championships were won in straight sets and finished just before an afternoon rain shower.
West Valley captured the team title with 42 points, followed by Lathrop with 23, Monroe Catholic with 19, North Pole with 14 and Hutchison and Eielson with nine apiece.
West Valley’s Dana Raugust earned the girls singles title by notching a 6-2,
6-0 victory over North Pole’s second-seeded Dana Lemay.
In the boys singles title contest West Valley’s Jared Lees notched a 6-2, 6-0 win against Lathrop’s Alex Jordan.
West Valley’s Lydia Kurberg and Catherine Sample captured the girls doubles crown with another 6-2, 6-0 win against Lathrop’s Nicole Rogers and Tori Toms.
The final Wolfpack win came in mixed doubles, where Jeremy Weaver and Nettie Larson teamed to post a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Lathrop’s James Kardash and Rachel Jordan.
Ryan Burke and Jacob Hebard combined to score the only upset of the championship round as t he second-seeded team from Monroe Catholic claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over West Valley’s Josh Wells and David Schweigert.
The most exciting third-place match was in girls doubles as Eielson’s Aubrey Swammy and Kylee Lee came away with a 6-1, 5-7, 12-10 win against Hutchison’s Ashley Stark and Ashley Ante.
In other third place matches:
• North Pole’s Nick Acola and Patrick Polsey took the boys doubles match 6-2, 6-4 over Hutchison’s Ben Leslie and Austin Head.
• Lathrop’s Amber Lien defeated Eielson’s Mikaylee Lutz 6-3, 6-1 in girls singles.
• Monroe Catholic’s Kayla Rauenhorst and Nathaniel Brose posted a 6-0, 6-2 win against Hutchison’s Erich Giles and Cheyenne Martinez in mixed doubles.
• Monroe’s Sebastian Griffin defeated North Pole’s Teryl Lemay 6-1, 6-2 in boys singles.
All Conference teams
The All-Mid Alaska Conference teams were announced during the awards ceremonies following the tournament.
The girls team included North Pole’s Dana Lemay and West Valley’s Catherine Sample, Dana Raugust, Nettie Larson and Teresa Sample. Lydia Kurberg of West Valley earned honorable mention honors.
The boys team consisted of West Valley’s Jared Lees and Jeremy Weaver, Lathrop’s Alex Jordan and James Kardash and North Pole’s Teryl Lemay.
