If you were thinking about heading to Chitina to go dip netting this weekend, you might want to think again.
At least that was the word from charter operator Mark Hem on Wednesday night. The Copper River began coming up on Sunday and fishing success dropped Tuesday and Wednesday, Hem said. He rated Wednesday as a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best.
It looks like the river will continue to rise, too. It was warm and sunny in Chitina on Tuesday and Wednesday, which will likely produce considerable glacier melt and cause a major rise in the river. It will also slow fishing in “a major way,” Hem said.
“How high and how long I don’t know but it will slow and maybe even stop the fish from moving through,” Hem said on his recorded message Wednesday night. “I might be wrong; only time will tell.”
Hem’s recorded message is at 823-2200 or you can find it at www.chitinadipnetters.com
