FAIRBANKS — A Wasilla man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday night in the middle of Fox.

At 8:16 p.m., Daniel Abbett, 54, was driving south on the Old Steese Highway near Silver Gulch Brewery when he lost control of the older-model Dodge pickup truck he was driving, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Joyce Kelso, a witness who had just picked up her mail at the Fox General Store at the time of the crash, said it was hard to see what caused the vehicle to lose control in the darkness. She said she could see sparks as the truck skidded for more than 50 yards on either its back or its side before turning right-side up again. The driver, who troopers said was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck, she said. Many witnesses took out phones to call for help.

Abbett was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Troopers said alcohol was a factor in the crash.
