SEATTLE — Federal prosecutors say a Thurston County, Wash., man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shipping packages of methamphetamine and heroin to a small town in Alaska with plans to distribute the drugs there.

Robert Dean Grimes was sentenced Friday in federal court in Tacoma.

The U.S. attorney's office says the 52-year-old man was arrested in October 2011 when he returned to Washington from Alaska after eluding law enforcement when he tried to pick up the drug packages from the post office in Soldotna, Alaska.

Court records show Grimes and a co-conspirator tried to pick up the packages in Soldotna but were told to return the next day. When they did retrieve the drugs, they found the packages contained GPS trackers and threw them out of their vehicle.

Prosecutors say Grimes' co-conspirators were ultimately arrested in Alaska.

The U.S. attorney's office says Grimes' criminal history includes multiple drug trafficking convictions.
