North Stars 14U softball team claims tournament crown

FAIRBANKS — The Alaska North Stars girls 14U competition team from Fairbanks opened its two-week road trip to the Pacific Northwest with a bang last weekend.

The North Stars won six straight games and outscored their opponents 60-5 to claim the title in the Sunshine Summer Kick-Off Tournament at Selah, Wash.

“We are very proud of our girls for their efforts this weekend,” coach Bill Duffield said in an

e-mail to the News-Miner. “We still have a long road trip ahead of us, but it was a great start.”

By defeating the host Selah squad 8-4 in Sunday’s championship game, the North Stars became the first 14U team from the Interior to win a tournament Outside, according to Duffield.

The North Stars scored all the runs they needed in the third inning of the championship game when five players crossed the dish. Allison Norton singled home the first run, two more runs scored on an error and Haley McIntosh capped the rally with a two-run double. Shiana McLean tripled to score Duffield in the fourth.

The final two runs came in the sixth inning when Kacey Duffield singled home Jackie Lemons and Ciara Olalde reached first on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball. Duffield scattered five hits, walked three and struck out a pair to earn the win.

Duffield won four games in the tournament, while Shiana McLean earned a pair of wins.

The North Stars came out on fire Saturday, outscoring their opponents 41-1 in posting four wins.

“It was a very long day for them but it all paid off,” coach Duffield said. “It was a team effort all the way. The defense was stellar Saturday, and on offense, we were outstanding.”

Duffield hurled three shutouts (one was combined with McLean), including a perfect games in a 12-0 win against the West Valley Xtreme. She had seven strikeouts in that game. She pitched a one-hitter in a 9-0 win against the Yakima Lightning and a two-hitter in an 11-0 win against the Grays Harbor Heat. She had five strikeouts against the Heat.

“She was dialed in on all of her pitches,” coach Duffield said.

McLean earned a save against Yakima and pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts in a 9-1 victory against the West Valley Envy. She helped her own cause with a triple and an inside the park home run. Salena Maxwell added a pair of singles and scored two runs in the winning effort, while Olalde and Helen Key both doubled.

Olalde, McLean, Kacey Duffield and Abbi Walker had two hits apiece in the win against Grays Harbor. Walker had a double and triple and drove in four runs. McLean scored three times, Olalde tripled and Lemons doubled home two runs for the North Stars.

Duffield went 2 for 3 at the plate and McIntosh doubled in the win against Yakima. Norton had two hits and two runs batted in against the Xtreme.

In Sunday’s first game, an 11-0 triumph against the West Valley Envy, Olalde, Maxwell and McLean each had two hits.

Maxwell tripled and scored three times, McLean tripled and scored twice and Olalde doubled and scored twice. Payge Scanlon-Boswood doubled and drove in a run.

Other players on the team include Katie Browder, Jessica Hall, Tierney Varner and Robyn Heineken.
