FAIRBANKS — A 50-year-old Italian motorcyclist who crashed on the Dalton Highway is in critical condition in an Anchorage hospital, a spokeswoman for Providence Medical Center said Monday.

The motorcyclist, Italo Barazzutti, was driving a 1986 Honda south when he crashed Thursday near Prospect Creek, according to state troopers.

Barazzutti, of Tolmezzo, Italy, has written books about his solo motorcycle journeys across Europe, Mongolia and Russia. His most recent journey was a trek from the Tierra del Fuego in South America to Prudhoe Bay, which he began in 2009 in honor of his 50th birthday, according to his blog entries.

Nurses as of Sunday had not released information about Barazzutti’s condition. Kirsten Schultz, a spokeswoman for the hospital, provided the update by phone Monday.

Oh, the irony! I sure hope he recovers from his crash and is able to complete his journey someday....
