Miller announced his candidacy Monday morning in Juneau, a few hours after the Legislature adjourned. He picked up the endorsement of three state legislators.
The country is at a crossroads, facing a choice between the defense of a constitutional Republic or a “head-long plunge into socialism and more government control,” Miller stated in a news release announcing his candidacy.
Speaking to a group of supporters on the Capitol steps, Miller said federal debt has reached unsustainable levels and has affected foreign policy.
He proposed forming a standing congressional subcommittee focused on developing sound fiscal policy.
Miller said he disagrees with a recent congressional decision to expand federal stimulus spending by $18 billion.
He said borrowing and spending will cause long-run problems with inflation and unemployment.
Miller’s news release said he will be a senator who “brings Alaska values to Washington instead of Washington spin home to Alaska.”
Murkowski, who has served since 2002, announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination in Fairbanks on April 7.
On Monday, Sen. John Coghill and Rep. Tammie Wilson, both R-North Pole, endorsed Miller, according to the campaign news release. Sen. Fred Dyson, D-Eagle River, also backed Miller.
Miller, who grew up in Kansas, is a graduate of Yale Law School and holds a masters in economics from the University of Alaska.
He received an officer’s commission from West Point, with honors, and is a veteran of the first Gulf War.
After coming to Alaska 16 years ago, Miller worked as an attorney at Condon Partnow & Sharrock in Anchorage before being appointed as a state magistrate in Tok and Superior Court master for the Fourth Judicial District.
After moving to Fairbanks, he served as both an acting state District Court judge and a U.S. magistrate judge.
He left the judiciary in 2004 to run for the state House seat held by Rep. David Guttenberg, D-Fairbanks. He lost in the general election by about 3.5 percent of the vote.
Miller’s wife of 18 years, Kathleen Tompkins-Miller, is a teacher.
She was appointed in March 2009 to a non-attorney seat on the Alaska Judicial Council, the seven-member body that nominates state judges for the governor’s consideration.

You need to change your name first, because anyone who backs lisa doesnt know what the tea party or the word patriot truely stands for. Joe Miller is a conservative unlike lisa. Calling him a carpetbagger is totally wrong since this state has seen its strongest and most favorable economic growth with the event of the gold rush and the Oil pipeline. This Awsome and Great State was made by, and will continue to be made by people like Joe Miller. I believe if your calling Joe Miller a carpetbagger your calling alot of Alaskans carpetbaggers.
I think a few of you need to hear that again.
"TeaPartyPatriot"-If you consider Lisa Murkowski good representation for this state, just because she was born and raised here, you should probobly go find another state to live in. Daddy got Lisa in the seat she's in now, not Alaskans. "Jailhousemark"-you're rude. "McGrumpy"-when you've graduated from college with a degree in whatever field you're going into, you have the right to charge whatever you want within reason, isn't that why we get degrees? Mr. Miller is fair and reasonable. Did you graduate from Yale Law School? Doubt it. What's wrong with a Lawyer running? I'd certainly like a Lawyer to represent me when i'm in trouble, so it would be AWESOME to have a Lawyer represent our State. "grace3"-Mr. Miller's credentials are FAR from exaggerated, (he was indeed a full time JUDGE, the youngest in the State of Ak) Get your facts STRAIGHT! "Chena Steamer"-Joe Miller isn't being prosocuted by the feds either...?? "spaceman"-with a name like "spaceman" you must be pretty "whacky" yourself! "Oh-please"-Class is something Joe Miller is certainly not lacking! You don't know him. "Skinfish"-BOTH Mr. Miller & Mrs. Miller are PRIVATELY EMPLOYED! No GOV paychecks there buddy!!! Do your research smart guy. "SkyArcticFox"-Why judge somebody by the people that endorse them? That's not smart. You can't base your oppinions of a candidate through your oppinions of the people that like/vote/endorse someone. Everyone is their own person. & by the way, it isn't nice to call names such as "Junkyard Queen" seems to me like you need a good lesson in being "CLASS BEFORE TRASH" yourself. "kropotkin"-get your facts straight kid. If you all don't have anything decent to say, don't say anything at all. Keep your unfair oppinions to yourself and actually get to know the candidate before speaking poorly of them. Use some intelect people. Joe Miller is one of the smartest men out there. On election day, i'll be the first one lined up with my vote for Joe. Bye-bye Lisa! Hellllloooo JOE MILLER!
OOOUee! Howard Stern!, now that is a good source to quote from. Thanks for letting us all know where you get your brain food from RadioK.
Plus, he's a lawyer. Howard Stern titled a chapter of one of his books "How Government F's You And Me." Lawyers play a major role in that, in case you haven't figured that out for yourself.
Will anyone worth voting for step up to the plate in this election? Lisa Murkowski isn't it, either. I was a witness to Lisa running around the Egan Center assaulting people who were celebrating her father's defeat back in 2006. In my eyes, that wasn't quite as bad as the fact that none of these so-called journalists who were there could be bothered (or were perhaps afraid) to consider that a story was happening right under their noses.
Miller has been sucking at the government teat for years. A free education, state and federal patronage jobs. Palin appointments for him and his wife.
He couldn't beat Guttenberg. I'm sure he's going to give baby girl Murkowski a run for her money.
Exactly! That is precisely what we who are conservative would like to see. Not all conservatives are Republican and not all Republicans are conservative...
At last, it appears we have ammo in a much larger magnum caliber, it can take on the most dangerous slimy beasts in the GOP the Great Slimy "R.I.N.O.". The new and improved "Miller Ultra magnum round" is guaranteed not to ricochet off target like the famous but disappointing "Palin round". Nope, the Palin round proved very it just was not reliable, it had a soft spot for the McCain RINO and it just bounced off! Well that's what you get when you go hunting for donkeys and you take a RINO with you as your hunting partner.
Are you certain that was a robo-call? It could have been the senator.
Jerk.
