FAIRBANKS - Katey McMurrough, 11, was chosen as student of the week by her sixth-grade teacher, Rachel Woodhull, for showing excellence in the classroom.

McMurrough is her student council’s president and is on the A honor roll at Anne Wien Elementary School. Woodhull said McMurrow has a personal belief that “school is important to her life.”

“I like school because it’s fun and I get to learn new things,” McMurrough said.

Woodhull said McMurrough values individual differences, wants everybody to be part of a big team and puts aside peer pressure to make the right decisions.

Some of those values are reflected in her favorite book, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee.

McMurrough also sets high expectations for herself, according to her teacher.

She someday expects to put all her energy to something she has a passion for.

The most interesting thing she learned recently was while studying Egyptians. She chose to do a project on Egyptian cats and how they were treated in ancient times.

“I want to work with animals when I get older like at a zoo or a veterinarian office,” she said.
