FAIRBANKS — Fairbanks inched closer to the 50-degree-below-zero mark Sunday but still fell two degrees shy.

A low temperature of 48 degrees below zero, the coldest of the winter thus far, was recorded at Fairbanks International Airport early Sunday morning.

It marked the ninth day this month a temperature of 40 below or colder was recorded at the airport. The temperature also hit 48 below Saturday night at the airport.

“I had 52 below at my house in North Pole,” meteorologist Cary Freeman at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks said.

Thick ice fog blanketed the urban area once again Sunday. The National Weather Service issued a dense ice fog advisory through much of the day. Visibility was down to almost zero in high traffic areas and the weather service advised drivers to drive with their lights on.

The cold temperatures are expected to continue through the rest of this week, Freeman said.

“The models are indicating colder air again next weekend,” he said. “One model is bringing it in from Russia and the other model is bringing it in from Canada.

“The only thing that may warm us up is that we have a cloud deck making its way this way from the west,” Freeman said. “It may warm up a little through (today) and Tuesday; it’s going back down in the cellar again.”

-32 and holding steady.

Looks like some clouds moving our way from the North, so maybe it will warm up a few degrees..

Found this weather bureau satellite image a few days ago in one of the other chat rooms..

It would be nice to open up all the school gyms at a certain temperature to let kids run around. We're heating them anyway.

Hey, what an idea, another way for the villiage idiots to raise a kid crap!

Are you volunteering to supervise? Our school teachers are over worked as it is, with very little home life. Further more, lets feed the kids too, that way you don`t have to be responsible and cook at home for them.

We can use the PFD from the participants to fund this great idea.

By the way, why on planet earth are the tax payers in the resturant business?

If a parent does not house or dress their child properly it is child abuse. Same notion when you don`t feed them!!

My dogs feet are cold, my kids are bored and don't want to go outside, my car is cold, my fuel bill is high, and the indoor air is dry; I will be thrilled to see the end of January. I'm so looking forward to February and March when its sunnier and a little warmer and the dog races and Ice Park. Thank you to all who made the Ice Park possible. Its the best part of winter.

Sorry you're chewing through the woodpile. Zero will be shorts & tank tops weather after the past few.

This is when we're glad to live in a squatty log cabin with big logs & super insulated roof & floor, low ceilings & real arctic entry. Traditional arctic design and can heat with little effort. Cracks me up when people complain about the cost of heat for their 3 k sq. ft. so called modern house or worse a mobile home. yep paying for their dumb choice. (No offense intended - just sayin)
