With the thermometer at 42 below at 8:15 a.m., the Alaska Dog Mushers Association canceled it’s second Annamaet Challenge Series race of the season, while the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks was forced to postpone the Flint Hills Cup cross-country ski race at the Birch Hill Recreation Area.
The ADMA has yet to hold a sprint race this season.
Poor trail conditions prevented racing in December. When there was finally enough snow to a good trail, the first race of the season had to be postponed because of broken pipes at the Mushers Hall at Jeff Studdert Racegrounds.
If the weather warms up by next weekend, the ADMA will hold the third Annamaet Challenge Series Race on Jan. 22 at the Studdert Racegrounds.
The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks is hoping to take advantage of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday to hold the Woolly Rhino Open at Birch Hill.

More than a dozen die-hard runners turned out for the 32nd annual Airport Run on Saturday morning.
They had the choice of running either four or eight miles on out-and-back courses that started at Pike’s Landing.
