FAIRBANKS — Fairbanks Grizzlies head coach Robert Fuller didn’t have a record-setting 92 points in mind when he helped develope game plans for Friday night’s Indoor Football League game against the Arizona Adrenaline.

The first-year head coach just wanted the Grizzlies to execute their game plan to continue a four-game winning streak after the team started the season 0-3. Fairbanks’ execution was excellent Friday, as it rolled to a 92-32 win over the winless Adrenaline of Prescott Valley, Ariz.

“Personally, I don’t like scores like this,” Fuller said. “We wanted to focus on executing and the last thing we wanted to do was embarrass our opponent; but we still have to play hard.”

The 4-3 Grizzlies ran the ball hard, particularly Romandre Gibbs, whose six touchdowns and 202 yards in total offense was highlighted by 154 yards rushing on 18 carries with five scores.

“We studied film and we took what they gave us. We knew they were going to play hard and they had no quit,” Gibbs said.

The 5-foot-10, 230-pounder scored on runs of 14 yards in the first quarter; 26, and 8 in the second quarter and 10 and 25 in the third quarter. He also caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Ratekin for the game’s first score with 13:26 left in the opening quarter.

Offensive lineman Jerome Johnson said the Grizzlies had emphasized the run during this week’s practices.

“During the week, we knew we had to get more runs and get yards,” Johnson said. “We respected our opponent. One of our teammates said we’ve got to kill an ant with a sledgehammer.”

It’s been a painful season so far for the 0-6 and expansion Adrenaline, who compiled 26 points in the second half after Fairbanks cruised to a 57-6 lead in the first half.

“As far as our team goes, we have a great team,” said running back Chris Chaney, who scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter and on a 4-yarder with 34.5 seconds left in the contest.

“We beat them in the stats, like first downs, but we didn’t come out with the ‘W,’” Chaney said. “We’re getting tired of moral victories. We’re looking to get that first victory.”

Fairbanks, which has next week off, got two scores each from Eric Taylor (runs of 4 yards apiece) and backup quarterback Donovan Porterie (1 and 16-yard runs).

Ratekin, who alternated with Porterie, threw three touchdowns among his five passes, including a 23-yard strikes to Desmond Tardy in the first quarter and Tony Taylor in the second quarter.

Defensive back Daudi White had two interceptions and returned a fumble 11 yards at 43 seconds into the fourth quarter for an 85-18 lead.

Fairbanks scored on a safety with 10:16 left in the second for a 30-6 lead as Arizona starting quarterback Jaime Cota slipped in the end zone while getting pressured by Grizzlies defensive end Devin Robinson. The Grizzlies also collected a 1-point rouge, making the score 79-18, after Adrenaline kick returner Lamont Reed Jr. was tackled in the end zone the end of the third quarter.

Arizona got touchdown catches from Muhammad Shamsid-Deen (42 yards in the first quarter) and James Mayfield (13 yards in the third quarter) and a 3-yard run in the third from two-way lineman Ronnie Tate.

The Grizzlies, who next visit the Chicago Slaughter on April 22, wore pink jerseys and the game was played with a pink football as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Fans donated $1,050 to the Breast Cancer Detection Center of Fairbanks during the first half, and the jerseys were auctioned after the game.
