Terri: Absolutely spot on. Thanks for sharing. It's amazing how quickly locals forget all of the good that people do in this town. As you probably saw while you were here, it's unfortunately wide-spread here in Fairbanks...very judgmental. Al did an admirable job under difficult circumstances and truly turned lemons into lemonade. With no disrespect to any of his predecessors, I and many others will always view Al as the coach that turned UAF men's basketball around and truly took it to the next level. Good luck to you and Al.

alaskaflower...uh, sorry to burst your rose-colored glasses...but I work in downtown Fairbanks and unfortunately for everyone (locals and tourists alike), there are far too many drunks wandering the streets. I was just approached by one yesterday as I got out of my car...ignored him as he used some very colorful language as I walked away. They are still there, with unfortunate consistency, and it's not a great place to give a first impression to the tourists. The MTC will just give them another loitering place.

How about paying off the PERS/TRS retirement deficit? It's one of the single largest debts we have today. The new formula seems to be working in keeping the debt from growing..let's take care of the remainder while we can. There will soon be a large batch of new state retirees that we must, by law, fund their retirement and benefits for...let's fix this while we have the funds to do so.

"I’m kind of afraid of the comments that I see in the News-Miner (letters to the editor and online comments) that say ‘Coach Sokaitis is your guy. You don’t need to go anywhere else.’”

As a university official in charge of the selection process it is important to remember that these very public opinions that you are "afraid of" are what you have asked for by providing these forums. Whether you agree with them or not...as an official directly involved in the search process, you should probably keep your thoughts to yourself and in the confines of the selection committee.

"Anything but Al." Wow...what a comment. So it doesn't matter if the person is an ax-murderer, drug dealer or child molester...as long as it's not "Al", then life will be good. I'm not sure what Al did to you, but you obviously have a vendetta against him.

Outraged...Al was at odds with the former athletic director, Cory Schwartz. The atmosphere was apparently so tense and unworkable that Al chose to take himself out of the mix. He never wanted to leave in the first place.
