tok242,
Sad is the fact that you expected her to send a letter to someone who she placed into a position of authority. No matter the issue, that is ridiculous. It certainly points out the pettiness of Monaghan and his need to seek revenge for being removed, no matter what the circumstances.
And just how did he harass the public officials, he made calls as a concerned citizen. Just because he is the governors husband should give it no more weight. But then, you probably think it should have been written in triplicate and double spaced.
And the thing about calling to ask him to campaign, you would expect that someone appointed by the governor would be more than willing to do that, if not, then "do you want another job".
p.s. if your in Denmark why do you care....

I would venture to say most of you wouldn't make the same nasty comments if your real name was attached to it...

tok242,
What is really sad, is that as our highest ELECTED public official, she has been admonished for firing someone that she had the RIGHT to fire.
Lost in all of this process is that fact. The rest of the stuff is just noise.
But, it also sends a message to EVERY person elected to state government positions. No matter how egregious the conduct of someone that works for the state, you better not have anyone closely related to you call and complain, right or wrong.
Also tok242, what was her personal benefit from all of this, and how is she in violation of the state ethics laws. The findings fail to talk about this, but maybe you know more and could enlighten the rest of us...

Whatever little bit of damage he thinks may have done to her credibility is not even close to the damage he has done to his own. She was vindicated in the firing of him, which was the main point of the investigation. The fact that this "investigation" was driven by her opponents in the legislature gives it little weight.
The findings that Mr. Palin made a few phone calls to try and get, what he considered, a rouge trooper removed from his post should be no different than any individual calling and making a complaint. It should have triggered an investigation, and the removal if it was warranted.
The public should be more concerned that the troopers union has enough pull to keep someone in a position of authority when, if all the reports are true, they should have been removed based on the use of bad judgment and poor decision making.

Having lived in Cold Bay for 5 years, I think I know the area pretty well. There are over a hundred miles of gravel roads around Cold Bay, and one more road would not harm the eel grass on the Bering sea side of the peninsula. The road is I life link for the people of King Cove. Whoever wrote the NY times story probably never set foot in Cold Bay or King Cove and has no understanding of the weather that occurs around there. Winds of 40 mph are quite common and channeled winds gusting to 70 mph are also quite common. With the smaller aircraft that fly into King Cove it is dangerous and for someone injured or seriously ill a nightmare. I have also been at the dock when planes could not fly and fishing boats would bring people over, and it is very difficult and dangerous to tie up the vessels, and then get the people up on the dock when you keep getting blown over.
This is a win, win situation and should have been done long ago.

OK, so I have to ask how many wind farms are in production today. Talk is great, but I lived in a place that is perfect for this and they essentially said no, it is cost prohibitive.
There are probably 100 communities in Alaska that could be 100 percent alternative energy, but they are not. I wouldn't hang my hat on Senator Stevens changing that!

I think your getting there on the NOW thing, but your readers also want ALL the facts, and BOTH sides of the story.

Thanks for keeping us up to date Dermot.
Jay,
As far as your committee meeting on retail gasoline, as usual these things drag on with no answer, and the retailers and oil companies win. Millions of extra dollars are going to the retailers and oil companies every month the committee drags its feet. The real answer to this is REGULATION by the state. Then they have to justify bending us over the barrel.

Gil and inchworm,
Name another job that you can work 190 days a year and get a years salary? The average full time employee works about 250 days a year, and a lot of them have degrees too.
You may not call it a vacation, but you don't have to work if you don't want too! But, I know several of them that do in the summer, and make very good money without the distraction of having to work two jobs at the same time.
As I said before, I appreciate what teachers do, and they probably do deserve a raise. I just think the position of the teachers should be presented fully.

tok242,
And I don't care what her reason was to fire him, it could have been for wearing plaid pants to work. It makes no difference. He served at her request, and whatever reason she gives should be good enough. Many governors before her have fired people for less and it didn't make the headlines like this has. It is clearly him seeking revenge....
