Sure, Commissioners are at-will employees. Not a single person is questioning this. What needs to be questioned are Palin's motives in firing Monegan. This is an act of revenge at its finest.
On Moving on

I totally agree with the original letter...Tier IV has a horrible retirement plan. This not only affects new State Troopers but also new teachers and University employees. The least the State could do is revert back to Tier III. How are they ever going to retain good employees with a system like this?
James, if you're so unhappy with the amount you have to pay why not find a job that does pay for most of your health care premiums?

charvanmar, you are right; Troopers are not above the law. But neither is the Governor. I guess she'd rather have a Commissioner with a sexual harrasment claim against him, who, when appointed last week denied the claim but then did a 360 and admitted that yes indeed, he did have one lodged against him. Why would she ever want someone like Kopp running the Department of Public Safety? Oh wait, because he's a "yes" man and will do whatever her heiness wants.

I totally agree with chelly on this one. Sure, the Governor has every right to remove a commissioner from her cabinet. She does not, however, have the right to abuse her power as Governor and remove a commissioner because he wouldn't do her "dirty deeds".
I can't believe I ever supported this woman as governonr (thank God I didn't vote for her). In my book she's on the same corrupt playing field as Stevens and the rest of the VECO cronies.

Doesn't anyone see a conflict of interest here? Sarah Palin asked Monegan to discipline and/or fire her ex-brother-in-law. Conflict of interest and abuse of her power. Then you have Todd Palin running around taking pictures of Wooten on a snowmachine and sending them to Monegan, ect...sounds like a smear campaign to me. Monegan said that the governor and Todd both spoke to him about Wooten on numerous occasions yet Sarah says "ridiculous" and Todd can only remember speaking with him once. Then you have the Commissioner of Administration saying she can't remember speaking to Monegan about firing Wooten...how convienent that all of sudden these top officials can't remember jack &*^%.
Sarah knows what she did was wrong and is now trying to cover it up.
Monegan DID step aside diplomatically until he starting hearing lies and innuendos about the Department of Public Safety as a whole.
I for one am hoping that the Feds will take this case and do a thorough investigation into Palin's actions.

"This seven-part series offers no proof of guilt or innocence. It does document gaps in the police investigation that raise questions about the victim’s last conscious hours. It points out that the group convicted of the teen’s murder may have been prosecuted with forms of evidence identified later in national studies as contributing to some wrongful prosecutions elsewhere. And it shows how rulings from this state’s courts have undermined Alaska Native confidence in the justice system by keeping juries from weighing all that’s known about the crime."
Way to go FDN. No bias here, huh? "Decade of Doubt"...are you kidding me?!
Thank God these four MURDERERS are STILL behind bars.

fishnhunter,
The guy on the 4wheeler was a real piece of work...remember he was the one who woke up one day and had this great idea of running the bulldozer into the side of FCC to "free" his buddies.
Good riddance.

I can't believe people are even arguing about this. What has this world come to?
Sure, it may be your right to drive on a public road but it is not your right to drink, drive and plow into a car that could possibly be carrying my family ultimately harming or killing them.

Just to add..my SSN starts with 574 but I wasn't born in Alaska.
Before 1986, if you claimed someone as a dependent on your taxes a SSN was not required. Then the IRS revised the IRC Code that year requiring that all dependendts and filers are required to have a SSN. I didn't get a SSN unti 1986 so my parents could claim me as a dependent on their taxes.
And I'll take a $2,000 dividend anyday!
On Alaska Permanent Fund dividend checks could top $2,000
