Concur, we should let the walruses and polar bears drown and let belugas disappear from Cook Inlet and the salmon populations crash totally (IF IT MEANS THE PEOPLE OF THIS STATE HAVE TO FREEZE IN THE COLD AND THE DARK TO ALLOW THEM TO SURVIVE)! We need fossil fuels to run our businesses and to heat our homes. Development of these resources can be done, however, AT THE SAME TIME we're developing those alternative energy sources.
You're also right, I don't care about the air or water pollution as long as fuel is $4.50 a gallon and rising. Now is a good time to drill for oil and plow some of the profits back into alternative energy production development. I don't care where the energy comes from - solar, wind, geo-thermal, nuclear, or hydro-electric - as long as I don't have to pay 4 to 5 times the rate per kilowatt hour as the people in Anchorage/Juneau or the lower 48 States.
All this greenie stuff IS silly (for the most part); most of us have to drive to go to and from work and we need to work to pay for the exorbitant cost of fuel. I (and most of the people I know) live in Alaska because we don't want to live with our neighbors under our armpits in a slum in New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles.
Oh, BTW, Alaska has already been trashed in many places and is only now being cleaned up (some) - we can do both. Develope resources and clean up the mistakes of the past.

I read once that the Israelis do "Profile". They don't profile racially but they do profile for potential terrorist hijackers. The specific character traits are (or were) classified but they did most definitely have a set of (probably psychological) behaviorial traits and / or body language signs to look for.
Searching everyone who passes through uniformly (including 80 year old MOH recipients and midwestern grandmothers who worked in a defense plant in World War II) without regard for the people who could be a logical threat is stupid.

Too bad we can't deal with them like the French did when the "Rainbow Warrior" was harrassing them over a resumption of nuclear testing...

Does anyone remember what the standing operational guidance regarding aircraft hijackers was prior to 911?
When anyone took over control of an airplane by use of force, we were advised to "give them what they want". The then-prevailing intelligence held that once the hijackers reached their preferred destination, they were no longer a threat (and the plane and passengers should then be released).
El Al (the Israeli Airlines) knew better and began training air marshals; they learned their lesson after hijackers took one of their planes and flew it to Entebbe, Uganda. We, on the otherhand, were intellectually superior (until the Arab Hijackers took control of those four planes on September 11th; they had no intention of ever releasing anyone but fully intended to use the planes themselves as weapons).

As is usual, I've seen some honest comment and some honest questions but I've also seen a lot of idiocy on both sides of the issue.
I don't trap (and never have). I also have nothing against trapping or trappers (so long as they do it correctly and obey all appropriate laws while doing so).
I would like to believe the Lazenbys about their dog, Grizzly being a well mannered and friendly dog (but he was a Rottweiler and not all Rottweilers are friendly and out-going when out of sight of their owners). There is also a big difference between a 4-year old Rottweiler and a neighbor's 4-year old child. The former can be an extremely dangerous in the here & now while a 4-year old child only has the potential to be extremely dangerous in a decade or so.
I do live 'in the country' and I do not and would not place traps; I do, however, frequently carry a handgun whenever I'm in my yard. I do not do this in order to kill any living thing that trespasses on my property. I do this out of prudence.
A neighbors' 4 year old child is probably lost and may need help to go home but a neighbor's 4 year old Rottweiler may be 'lost' but may also have a violent and aggressive nature. I don't know your dog; if it is friendly, it will have a friend in me. If it is not friendly, it is on my property. I will not be threatened on my own property.
I don't have (and will not put up) a fence around my property either - it is, after all, my property. I don't feel I should have to cower behind a fence or a wall. I don't care if animals - wild or domestic - cross my property when I'm not in my yard. I don't keep food (bait), trash, or other 'attractants' outdoors to lure animals.
If I'm outdoors when said animals come on to my property, I will allow them to pass without hindrance UNLESS they approach me. I will not approach the animal first. If they are friendly and show me that they pose no threat, I will not harm them. I will not poison, bait, or trap trespassing animals but aggressive animals that threaten me in my own yard do face specific consequences.

Chewtoy,
You'd better stop that; I don't want to find myself agreeing with you too often (twice in one day that is). I don't agree with gambling either - I think the ones who would be primarily supporting it by buying tickets would be the ones least able to afford it (and I won't bore you with the religious aspects of my objections).
As regards G. Gordon Liddy, no, I didn't get to go hear him when he was here. I was about ready to stop listening about the time he went off the air anyway. The "flirting" was a bit over the top for me (especially when he professed to be happily married and monogamous)...

chewtoy,
I generally don't agree with you but in this case, I'm reminded of something G. Gordon Liddy used to say, "Even a stopped clock is right twice a day."
I agree with you, "We didn't oust Ted. Ted ousted himself by being convicted of 7 felonies."

"Another bunch of fear-mongering right-wing drivel... We all know that terrorism is an important issue; we just don't agree with you on how best to combat it..."
What happened in Mumbai is not "fear-mongering", it is frightening period. Further, it is the act of a frightening group of religious fanatics who are bent on domination of the world in the name of their religion. President-Elect Obama has not got a clue on how to deal with these lunatics.
He intends to talk with them "without pre-conditions" (his words, not mine) in the great tradition of Neville Chamberlain and his Appeasement of Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. Whether he - Barack Obama - will learn before it is too late how to defend the United States remains to be seen. He will not protect us by only talking to the bad guys!
I know there are a lot of posters who dislike Christians but the fact remains, clear and irrefutable, that the actions of Timothy McVeigh were soundly and roundly condemned in pulpets of Christian Churches across this nation. The same CANNOT be said for the Mosques in other parts of the world (nor, I think, for the majority of mosques within the United States).
I think the day is coming when short-sighted Muslims will go one step too far and the rest of the world will declare Jihad against them. It won't be a formal, declared war by any nation or group but a loose affiliation very similar to what the Muslims have decided to do - small groups and even individuals will take it upon themselves to avenge themselves for the murder of their own family members by targeting the nearest group or groups of Muslims.
When Muslims find the "shoe on the other foot" so to speak, perhaps them will then be willing to talk about condemning the actions of all terrorists (including their own).

If we're going to send them "on vacation" we could borrow some ideas from the Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpiao and put them up in tents, and make them wear pink underwear and eat balognia sandwiches. Or, we could revive the old French Penal Colony idea and send them to French Guiana (better known as Devil's Island). Pick a place full of crocodiles, poison snakes, and insects and surrounded by sharks. Work them 16 hours a day with almost no food and bad water.
No, wait we can't even do that to the scum at Guantanamo Bay...

BigDan,
I hope you're right about all the promises Obama is going to "sweep under the rug". I'm still afraid of what all he said he was going to do and if he does any of them, I don't think it will be good for the United States (or Alaska) but if he reneges on any of his campaign pledges, that can only be a 'good thing'.
In this case, the more he fails to deliver on his promises the better it will be for the United States (and maybe the Liberals will be right - maybe he won't be as bad as I was afraid he'd be)...
