This is a very nice article about a very nice woman doing good things in our community. We all have a right to be here and do what we love, whether it be riding horses or dog sledding, snowmachining or whatever. I think if you don't have something nice to say, you should keep it to yourself instead of posting your rude and negative comments here.

I don't know why the DNM continues this comment section w/ the many negative comments that are posted on a regular basis. If you can't say something nice.....or constructive....then don't say anything at all.

Mit--the problem w/ the PFD criteria is there are people elible for and receiving the PFD who don't pay for any heating fuel or electricity. Military in base housing for example. As far as K.I.S.S.....I agree w/ AlaskaCub. Keep it simple by simply having the state subsidize a portion of each gallon of oil or gas and kilowat of electricity. After all this is $$ to help w/ energy....not a "stimulus" check.

I think the news miner should post a comment reporting this....I cannot recall it either.

Wonder if it includes those who do not pay for heat and electricity?

The problem I see with increasing the PFD in order to assist us w/ our energy costs is that there are many folks who get PFDs who don't buy heating oil, electricity, and in many cases, gasoline. These being military folks living in base/post housing and kids.

On State could share Alaskans’ home-heating costs

WoooHooo, this is a great idea. It makes so much more sense to help pay the actual cost of the oil rather that give money to every man, woman, and child who qualifies for and gets the PFD (as previously proposed). This helps us where we really need it most. As for renters, this should help keep your rent down. In addition, I wish they would also consider something similar to this for gasoline, and electricity (and natural gas for you gas users). But as a home heating oil user whose bank account is near empty, I appreciate this very much right now. Thanks Sarah.

My first thought on this was similar to rjdew's. I think this will increase the likelihood of more DUIs....and we know we have WAY too many of those in this town. Moving the location of these alcohol products will not solve the problem.....if they want it, they will get it, somehow, someway.....or they will just turn to something else that is more readily available to them. Maybe the city should spend their money on education, treatment, enforcement, rehabilitation?

Mandating the kind ammo is not the solution. That might defeat the purpose because fewer people would shoot because that ammo is so costly. A better solution would be to find a way to dispose of the filters locally. I'm not even certain if the filters are still being sent outside....as I said earlier that was the case a few years ago.
Also, I do agree that the hunter ed classes are reasonable. Because they are required by the state, I think its important that the state keep them reasonable. I think two things are important here....we should'nt suggest to "them" to mandate anything more to us the citizens.....and we should'nt suggest to "them" that they increase any prices to us the citizens! Enough is enough.

I have been shooting at the range for about 7 years. Several years ago when budget cuts were threatening closure I recall that one of the big operational costs to this range was the disposal of the lead contaminated filters. There was no local place to do that and so they had to be shipped outside. The filters are heavy and must be treated as hazmat.
To Doug in Salcha. It may seem to most that the range has limited hours, but in reality it is used full time. The high school rifle teams practice there; hunter education happens there; pistol leagues are shot there; gun safety classes happen there; the youth hunter education challenge competition happens there; and other events. It is almost always busy. Yes the public shooting hours are limited but they have expanded quite alot in recent years. Go to the www.aimcomm.org website and check out the public shooting days and times. My husband and I shoot there at least twice a week. And...Salcha isn't really so very far; we have a man who comes from Delta every Wed evening from Sep - May to shoot in the pistol leagues there. Maybe you should try that, its great fun, its warm, it increases your shooting accuracy, and we have great folks who shoot in the leagues.
I'd also like to say that I encourage everybody to support keeping this range open, even if you don't go there to shoot regularly. It's just plain good for the community!
Lastly, thanks to the News Miner for this great editorial.
