When I was in high school I volunteered at the animal shelter. The reasons we heard for owner surrender were rarely that it was a problem animal. Most surrenders were for the most trivial, ridiculous reasons ("I got a new couch and don't want the dog shedding on it"). It's heartbreaking not just to see these animals given up, but also to think that they were so little loved to begin with.

Doug, I admire your perseverance in trying to convince your wife to get a shelter dog. I'm sure you'll find one that's perfect for your family! Loving Companions Animal Rescue will let you take a dog home for a "trial period" before committing to adoption. Their url is http://www.lovingcompanionsanimalrescue..... Another one is Golden Retriever Rescue: http://www.grrf.org/ They also do the trial thing and are very, very nice. When they returned my call about one of their dogs and learned that I had already gotten a dog from somewhere else, they told me to call them back if I ever needed help or advice with her! Good luck!

That beehive takes three hours to do? I don't think I could even sit still in a chair for three hours.

How is it that you people can already have your minds made up and feel strongly enough about it to argue with strangers? I don't think we'll truly know whether the climate is changing, and if so, why, for maybe a hundred years!

MrGreen, newspapers entertain as well as inform. That's why we have personal interest stories, sports reports, profiles of unusual people, recipes, et cetera alongside the news. Sure, our time has a lot of important issues to tackle, but does that mean that until we have achieved world peace, an end to poverty, equitable world food distribution, education for all, the end of sweatshops, the end of pollution, and all the rest, none of us can have hobbies or read for pleasure?

I have one opinion. I am pro-choice, but I very much appreciate that she walked the walk with her anti-abortion stance and carried her Downs baby to term. It shows some real integrity and commitment.

I'm very sorry for that poor woman's horrible experience, but have you other readers looked up the website of "Her Wild Song"? I could have gotten a bad first impression, but the whole outfit strikes me as... curious. I don't get the impression that they are a very practical bunch. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but that web site doesn't exactly scream, "We have excellent wilderness training combined with good common sense."

I felt it in my cabin along Chena Pump. Earthquakes have a special "feel" to them that people who grew up in earthquake areas recognize. It's distinct from a big truck rolling by, or any other such thing.
