Hey joan and rose and all-

The first time I went to Alaska, I begged my way into a summer job at the Park, which was for a set amount of time and included room and board. I flew up and worked the summer there and had the GREATEST time imaginable, exploring Denali and venturing farther away with co-workers that had cars... and befriending some folks in nearby Healy, which showed me a bit of how true Alaskans lived. Went back to Illinois (birth state) and Arizona for the winter and then drove back up to AK the following spring with a gal pal I had met in the park. We had our jobs waiting at the park, but took a month and a half just driving where ever we wanted to see in Alaska, camping and eating on the cheap, checking out all the local pubs, good times. She ended up getting a job in McCarthy and I in Homer, at the historic General Store. I spent the summer living in a tent on the Spit... with a crab pot and a license, I ate so well I couldn't believe it. Each and every day, when I climbed out of my tent and took in the view and the air... I knew I was finally "home". Perfect place for my wandering spirit! Highly recommend it, and when I worked for the park, it was 1992 and a company called ARA did most of the concessions, including the McKinley Chalets and the Park Hotel, and I would do some research on who does concessions there now. A company called Grayline did bus tours and employed a bunch of folks as well. Get yourself a summer job (people of all ages and backgrounds do so!... singles, marrieds, aimless wanderers... retirees...) -- it is a great way to test the waters, with a safety net! Cheers!

Hey Rose! And all others... I hope everyone is doing well, but wanted to say that I moved from Mesa, Az, to Denali NP the first time I even went to AK. For a summer job... I arrived in shorts and birks and had to go quick into the restroom at the airport and put on pants and real shoes... we broke trail in hip deep snow on the way to our dorms at the park.

And you are not crazy, you are correct in thinking people are jealous. Or they are just sheep and cannot think outside the box. Peace to all!

hey smithjoanem- I used to live in Mesa, Az, and the thing is, it's a dry heat! You can count on the weather and that is what a lot of people seek. When your family in the midwest is freezing their niblets off at Christmas and you are rollerblading at 70 degrees and sunshine, there is peace in that. I prefer the seasons though!

hey all! Beauty reigns supreme in Fairbanks today!

Hey markg454--- how can you be an OU Sooner and an Aggie?? There's a fundamental gap in my understanding of that one... my hubby is an Aggie and all the Ags I know are 100% Maroon Blood Bleeders with no room for another team, esp. from O. Just curious!

ConnieJean- the thing is, about the aurora cam, look at it in the dark of night and you may be lucky enough to catch the auroras in action. Then it is super cool!

cheers~

ConnieJean- I wish I could be more of a help but I'm not super technological! Maybe if you copy the address and paste it into your address bar rather than click the link? Although I just tested and after I clicked the link the cam came right up. Maybe refresh your browser after clicking? I'm not sure and I'm sorry it didn't come up.

I don't live in AK currently, but do wonder about Gov. Palin's anti-conservation stance and her desire to overturn Roe v. Wade, as I have been reading today. There is much to learn about her and does anyone consider that she was chosen largely to lure Hilary's devotees? Does the simple fact that she is a woman equate to educated adults changing parties? I just don't think McCain chose his running mate for all the right reasons. Time will tell.

patzcatz- I currently live in my hometown in Ce. Illinois but have lived in Homer, AK and was lucky enough to spend many spring breaks in Venice, in the boat harbor. Livin' was easy then and there!
