FAIRBANKS — Alaska State Troopers on Thursday identified the man who was found dead in the woods off University Avenue three weeks ago.
John J. Grandstaff, 45, of Fairbanks, was found lying face down near a tent in the woods at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Sept 20. Troopers said there were no signs of foul play.
It appears Grandstaff had been homeless for at least 10 years, according to
trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters. Troopers were not able to notify next of kin until Wednesday, she said.
A criminal background check showed Grandstaff had several misdemeanor convictions ranging from disorderly conduct to urinating in public to assault on a police officer to criminal trespassing in the past two years in Fairbanks.
Grandstaff’s body was sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy, but results were not available.
