To the editor:
Last year, the Board of Game was presented with new regulations for taxidermists being proposed by the Department of Public Safety. We were told these proposed regulations were needed to help stop and catch illegally harvested animals.
We all agree that we don’t want this illegal activity. But these regulations would have caused double work for taxidermists, subjected us to warrantless searches and would not have ensured in any way that these regulations would prevent the problem.
When I called Tammie Wilson about my concerns with these proposed regulations, she went and visited several taxidermists in Fairbanks to learn how they operate their businesses and asked them how these regulations would affect the operation of their businesses. She learned that these regulations would cause double work for taxidermists, subject us to warrantless searches and would not in any way ensure that these regulations would prevent the problem of illegal harvesting. She discovered that the taxidermists had a good working relationship with the Department of Public Safety and had voluntarily assisted in investigations in the past.
With Tammie’s help, these regulations were withdrawn by department and never presented to the board. No one wants our animals illegally harvested, but with her help we were able to continue working with wildlife troopers on this issue without added burden on our businesses.
Tammie is a hands on legislator like no other. We need her to keep working for us. She has my vote and I encourage everyone to vote for the hard-working, well-informed and tireless Tammie Wilson. I thank her for taking her oath of office to uphold the Constitution seriously and protecting 100 small businesses from losing their constitutional rights to due process.
