FAIRBANKS — The University of Alaska Fairbanks identified the man who shot and killed himself Saturday in the Rasmuson Library on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.
UAF police found Tschon (Sean) Ombadykow, 63, dead in a dark study room on the fifth floor of the library about 1 p.m. Saturday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police were called for what was reported as a person sleeping in the room.
UAF Police Chief Sean McGee said Ombadykow was a former worker at the UAF campus facilities division.
Students in a nearby study room heard a sound shortly before noon Saturday, but did not recognize it as a gunshot, McGee said.
Police were notified about 1 p.m. after a library worker went into the room to awaken Ombadykow, who appeared to be sleeping. The employee saw blood from Ombadykow’s wound and called police.
McGee said the gun was found at the site and there was no sign of foul play.
Ombadykow was pronounced dead at the scene.
