FAIRBANKS - Heavy, blowing snow has made the Steese Highway impassible over a 15 mile stretch at Eagle Summit.
Deep drifts have formed over the road, according to a travel advisory issued Tuesday morning by the Alaska Department of Transportation.
The gates at Miles 101 and 116 are down and the road is closed.
Conditions are also rough at 12-Mile Summit, about 85 Mile Steese Highway. Travel is not advised after 5 p.m., when work crews leave the area.
Snowfall elsewhere in the Interior is causing driving difficulties, with reduced visibility and patches of black ice reported. Drivers are cautioned to keep their headlights on and drive slowly.
Updates will be issued as conditions change.
