FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race is offering a minimum $100,000 purse for the 2013 race.
The race's board of directors made the announcement Friday, one day before race signup day.
Becky Alexander, president of the Alaska board, says the board had hoped to announce a larger minimum purse. But she says sponsorship and fundraising goals were not met for the 1,000-mile race. Alexander says the purse for next year's race will be increased if corporate sponsorship and fundraising allows.
Musher Hugh Neff won the race this year. He beat Allen Moore by just 26 seconds on Tuesday in one of the closest finishes ever. For coming in first, he was awarded $28,395.
