CARMACKS, Yukon - Unlike most places in North America, there wasn’t much talk of the Super Bowl in Carmacks on Sunday. There wasn’t even a TV tuned to the game between the Ravens and 49ers at the checkpoint at Carmacks Recreation Centre.

But Hugh Neff, who grew up in Chicago, carried some football memorabilia with him on the trail. While eating his breakfast after arriving, he pulled up his shirt to reveal a vintage Walter Payton Bears jersey. His lead dog, Walter, is named partly in tribute to the Hall of Fame running back.

Neff said he’s not as big a football fan as he used to be, and doesn’t even like the Bears much anymore, but still had a rooting interest in the big game. It ended up being a good day for Neff.

“I’m going for the Ravens,” he said. “I can’t stand San Francisco.”
