Fairbanks’ Chandler Wappett finished fifth in his first Junior Iditarod sled dog race on Sunday in Willow.

Wappett, a 15-year-old Lathrop High School sophomore, completed the 150-mile course from Willow to Yentna Station and back in 14 hours, 43 minutes, 12 seconds.

The race began on Saturday at the Willow Community Center and each musher had a 10-layover in Yentna Station before returning to Willow.

Wasilla’s Kevin Haper won his second straight title, finishing the race in 12:59.4.

Healy’s Rose Capistrant finished eighth for the second straight year. Capistrant, 16, crossed the finish line in 16:42:53.
