FAIRBANKS — University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks volleyball head coach Brian Scott announced the team’s upcoming 2019 schedule Friday.
The upcoming season includes two tournaments, eight nonconference matchups and 20 Great Northwest Athletic Conference contests.
“We wanted to build a schedule that really pushes our team,” Scott said in a UAF news release. “We have a great group of returners, and if we can face some challenges early on in the year, I think it will carry over and help us do well in conference play.”
Scott led the team to a 14-13 overall and 12-8 conference record in the 2018 season. 2018 was Scott’s fourth season as the Nanooks coach and the first winning season for the volleyball squad since 2008 (15-10). The 12 conference wins earned by the team in 2018 marked the most conference wins in a season since 2003 (13-5 GNAC).
The Nanooks will open the 2019 season with the annual Blue vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 23, followed by the Alumni game on Aug. 31.
After these exhibition games, the Nanooks will begin the regular season on the road at the Colorado School of Mines Volleyball Classic in Golden, Colorado. The UAF squad will face the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and Northern State in tournament play on Sept. 6 and Fresno Pacific and the Colorado School of Mines on Sept. 7.
“The CSOM Volleyball Classic will be a great early test for our team,” Scott said.
Following the tournament, the Nanooks travel to Los Angeles for the Division II West Regional Showcase hosted by Cal State LA. UAF begins the tournament with a double header against Cal State LA and Cal State East Bay on Sept. 12. They then take on Hawaii Pacific on Sept. 13 and Azusa Pacific on Sept. 14.
The Nanooks begin GNAC play on the road as well, traveling to Saint Martin’s on Sept. 19 and Seattle Pacific on Sept. 21.
The team will then return to Fairbanks for a set of four home games.
UAF will host in-state rival Alaska Anchorage for its homeopener Sept. 24, followed by Montana State Billings on Sept. 26., the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks on Oct. 3 and the Central Washington Wildcats on Oct. 5.
The Nanooks are scheduled to host two other teams in October, the Western Washington Vikings (Oct. 17) and the Simon Fraser Clan (Oct. 19) and will then be on the road for five matches throughout October and into the first week of November.
In November, UAF will take on the Concordia Cavaliers (Nov. 7) and the Western Oregon Wolves (Nov. 9) in a pair of home games.
The final regular season road trip for the Nanooks includes stops in Burnaby, British Columbia, on Nov. 14 to face the Simon Fraser Clan and in Bellingham, Washington, on Nov. 16 to face the Western Washington Vikings.
The regular season will conclude for the Nanooks with home games against the Seattle Pacific Falcons on Nov. 21 and the Saint Martin’s Saints on Nov. 23. The match-up with Saint Martins will also serve as senior night for UAF.
All home games will take place at the Alaska Airlines Court at the UAF Patty Center.
