The University of Alaska Fairbanks women’s basketball team will play on their home court 13 times during the 2019-20 season. Second-year head coach Kerri Nakamoto announced the Nanooks schedule for the upcoming season on Tuesday.
The Nanooks will kick off the season in Anchorage, facing San Francisco State University on Nov. 9, before taking on Chaminade University on Nov. 10 as part of a crossover series hosted by the University of Alaska Anchorage. Both nonconference games will take place at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Nooks will then head to California for another two nonconference games, facing Biola University in La Mirada on Nov. 14, before taking on Point Loma University in San Diego on Nov. 16.
The UAF women will then return to Anchorage to compete in the annual Seawolf Hoops Classic, hosted by UAA. The Nooks will play the Westminster Griffins on Nov. 22, then face the University of Wisconsin at Parkside Rangers on Nov. 23.
After a break during the 2017-18 season, the Mt. McKinley State Bank North Star Invitational will return for its second-straight year, taking place Nov. 28-30. The UAF-hosted tournament will feature three visiting teams: Chadron State (Chadron, Nebraska), Converse College (Spartanburg, S. C.), and Lake Erie College (Painsville, Ohio). The Nanooks will play Chadron on Nov. 28 and Converse on Nov. 29, closing out the tournament by facing Lake Erie on Nov. 30. All Nanooks games during the invitational will be played at the Alaska Airlines Court in Fairbanks.
Following the North Star Invitational, the UAF women will play Great Northwest Athletic Conference games for the remainder of the season. The Nooks will open conference play at home against Western Oregon on Dec. 5.
A new system of basketball scheduling by the GNAC will also mean seven double-header games for the UAF women’s and men’s basketball teams. Double-header dates include Dec. 5, Dec. 7, Jan. 9, Jan. 11, Jan. 30, Feb. 1 and Feb. 20. The women will always play first (5:15 p.m. AKDT on Thursdays, 1 p.m. on Saturdays) with the men playing at 7:30 p.m. AKDT on Thursdays, and 3:15 p.m. on Saturdays. There will even be one Nanooks triple-header this season, featuring the women’s and men’s basketball teams as well as the men’s hockey team, all playing at home on Jan. 11.
UAF will face in-state rival UAA at home on the Alaska Airlines Court at 7 p.m. AKDT on Jan. 14.
The 2019-20 GNAC Women’s Basketball Championships will be held Mar. 5-7, hosted by the Seattle Pacific Falcons at the Brougham Pavilion in Seattle, Washington. In order to earn a spot in the GNAC Championships, the Nanooks must finish the regular season in one of the top-six spots for league standings.
The Nooks finished the 2018-19 season with a 4-22 record overall, going 1-19 in GNAC play.
All home games and conference road contests during the 2019-20 season will feature live video with play-by-play commentary and statistics, available through the UAF Nanooks Stretch Internet Portal. More information regarding scheduling and ticketing will be available soon.
