FAIRBANKS — The Alaska School Activities Association announced on Monday  the state volleyball tournament match-ups for the West Valley Wolfpack, of the Mid Alaska Conference, and the Monroe Catholic Rams and Valdez Buccaneers, of the Aurora Conference.

The ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Volleyball State Championship takes place Thursday through Saturday in the Alaska Airlines Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

The state tournament features eight teams each in Class 3A and 4A brackets. Both brackets have double-elimination formats.

West Valley, the reigning, 20-time MAC champion, opens the 4A tournament against the Soldotna Stars, of the Northern Lights Conference, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. 

The Wolfpack-Stars winner advances to a semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday while the loser drops into an elimination match at 11:45 a.m. Friday.

The winner’s bracket final of the 4A tournament is set for 5:15 p.m. Friday, and the championship match is slated for 5 p.m. Saturday. Should an “if-necessary’’ match be required, it will be played at 6:45  p.m. Saturday.

Monroe Catholic, the runner-up from the Aurora Conference Tournament last week in Delta Junction, begins the 3A state tournament against the Nome-Beltz Nanooks at 11:45 a.m. Thursday. 

Valdez, which repeated as the Aurora tournament champion last week, makes its first serve of the 3A state tournament against the Homer Mariners at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Rams-Nanooks winner advances into a semifinal at 5:15 p.m. Thursday and the loser goes into an elimination match at 10 a.m. Friday.

The winner of the Buccaneers-Mariners contest heads into a semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday, while the loser drops into an elimination match at 11:45 a.m. Friday.

The winner’s bracket final of the 3A state tournament is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Friday. The championship game is set to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday. Should the “if-necessary” be required to determine the state champion, it will begin at 3:45 p.m.

The if-necessary matches of the state tournament are one set apiece.

Valdez is aiming to repeat as the 3A state champion and Monroe is back in the state tournament for the first time in two years.
