The Monroe Catholic Rams boys soccer team shut out the Eielson Ravens 6-0 Tuesday and moved one win closer to the program’s first berth in the Division II state tournament.

Nathaniel Walsh scored two goals and goalkeepers Tre Puryear, Mason Muramoto and Aiden Gold shared the shutout for the unbeaten Rams in the Mid Alaska Conference game at the Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association turf fields.

Monroe Catholic, 6-0-0 overall and MAC, can clinch a state-tournament berth with a victory over the North Pole Patriots in a conference game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the FYSA turf.   

The Division II state tournament is scheduled for May 23-25 at Service High School in Anchorage and at Eagle River High School.

Monroe received its other goals Tuesday from Landon Nicholson, Puryear, Isaac Garcia and Izak Lohrke.

Puryear handled the goalkeeping duties in the first half, while Muramoto and Gold split time defending the net in the second half.


Roehl sparks Hutch baseball

Josh Bronson struck out 14 in six innings and Isaac Roehl batted 4 for 4, as the Hutchison Hawks rolled to a 16-6 win over the Eielson Ravens in a Mid Alaska Conference baseball game Tuesday night at West Valley High School.

Chris Luskeet contributed an RBI single and joined Mason Young, Roehl, Bronson and Dominic Niva as Hutchison players with multiple hits.

Bronson pitched all six innings, allowing eight hits, six runs and a walk. He also contributed  a single during the Hawks’ eight-run sixth inning.

Donovan Paul took the loss for Eielson. He struck out four while allowing eight runs, 13 hits.

Eight Ravens recorded one hit each.

Paul, Matt Steffers, Cody Benjamin and B. Lewis each batted 1 for 3 with a RBI. Paul and Benjamin also scored runs.

Benjamin, Brayden Grorud and Matt Steffers each had doubles, and Matt Scarboro and B. Lewis hit triples.

Scarboro, Jaydenn Manibusan and Grorud also scored.


Lathrop beats Hutch

Chase Reed hit 4 for 4 and drove in four runs, helping the Lathrop Malemutes beat the Hutchison Hawks in Monday’s Mid Alaska Conference game at Arco Field.

Nick Sutton hit 2 for 3 with a RBI for the Malemutes.

Lathrop generated 10 hits to Hutchison’s eight.


NP downs Monroe

The North Pole Patriots baseball team defeated the Monroe Catholic Rams 9-2 Monday night at Newby Field in North Pole.

Gavin Fischer struck out 14 while going the distance in the seven-inning Mid Alaska Conference game. He allowed eight runs, 13 hits and two walks during a five-inning stint.

Wyatt Kammer batted 3 for 4 with two runs and a RBI. Brock Weatherspoon drove in three runs during a 2-for-3 night with a double. Patriots teammate Alex Garcia finished 2 for 4 with a two RBIs, a run scored and a triple.

Jake Footit hit 1 for 3 with a run scored for the Rams, Mason Muramoto also hit for 1 for 3 and Monroe got a 1-for-2 effort from Pearson Clark.

Foot pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out four while allowing six runs, four hits and three walks.

Game Silas worked 2 2/3 innings, striking out three and allowing three hits and three runs.


Patriots softball

The North Pole Patriots softball team downed the Monroe Catholic Rams 21-1 Monday night in a Mid Alaska Conference softball game at the South Davis Fields.

Savannah Sievers batted 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Hailey Croan hit 2 for 4 with two RBIs. 

Sierra Glade went 2 for 3 with three RBIS and Cece Martinez drove  in a run with hitting 2 for 4. Grace Sikorski plated three runs while hitting 1 for 2 and Laura McCombs contributed a 2-for-2, two-RBI effort.

North Pole swept the Eielson Ravens in a MAC doubleheader Tuesday at the South Davis Complex.

The Patriots won 14-8 in the four-inning opener.

Janice Dykes hit 2 for 4 and Croan batted 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Alex Hodal batted 2 for 3 and drove in three runs.

Karlee Pearson hit 1 for 3 and Glade was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Martinez hit 1 for 3 for the Patriots.

Dykes went the distance in the pitching circle.

Mackenzie Paul hit a two-run double in the top of the second inning for Eielson.

The Ravens, 1-8 overall, scored eight runs in the third inning, aided by several walks.

North Pole took a 16-3 win in four innings in the second game.

Pearson batted 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Glade hit 1 for 3, while Shyler Umphenour, Martinez and Sikorski each went 1 for 2.

Dykes also pitched the distance in the second game for North Pole, 7-4 overall and 5-0 MAC.

The Patriots face the Hutchison Hawks in a conference at 5:30 p.m. today at the South Davis Fields.
