The Railbelt Conference Softball Championships take place today and Friday at the South Davis Fields.

The five-team, double-elimination tournament is a qualifier for the Division I state tournament of the Alaska School Activities Association/First National Bank Alaska Softball State Championships on May 31 and June 1 at the Cartee Complex in Anchorage.

The Railbelt tournament starts at 5 p.m. today, with the fourth-seeded Lathrop Malemutes facing the fifth-seeded Palmer Moose  on Field No. 2 and the second-seeded Colony Knights, of Palmer, meeting the third-seeded West Valley Wolfpack on Field No. 4. 

The Lathrop-Palmer winner plays the top-seeded Wasilla Warriors at 7:30 p.m. on Field No. 2. An elimination contest between the losers of the Lathrop-Palmer and West Valley-Colony games is scheduled for the same time on Field No. 4.

The winner’s bracket final (Field No. 4) and another elimination game (Field No. 2) are slated for 10 a.m. Friday. The elimination-bracket final is set for 12:30 p.m., on Field No. 2 and the championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Field No. 4.

If the team from the elimination wins in the championship game, an if-necessary game will be played to determine the conference tournament champion.

The teams in the championship game also advance to the Division I state tournament. 


MAC softball

The Eielson Ravens edged the Hutchison Hawks 7-5 in a Mid Alaska Conference softball game Wednesday at the South Davis Fields.

Tazja Coger had a double and Alexa Jenkins hit two singles for the Hawks. No statistics were reported for the Ravens.

Hutchison faces the Monroe Catholic Rams in a MAC game at 5:30 p.m. today at South Davis Field No. 3.

The Delta Junction Huskies, who have clinched the MAC regular-season title, swept the North Pole Patriots 19-3 and 11-0 in a doubleheader Wednesday in Delta Junction.

No statistics were reported on the game.

The MAC has no postseason tournament and the top two teams from its regular season advance to the Division II state tournament, also May 31 and June 1 at the Cartee Complex in Anchorage.


MAC baseball tourney 

The Mid Alaska Conference Baseball Tournament opens today with three games at Marlin Field.

Fifth-seeded Hutchison plays fourth-seeded Monroe Catholic at 12:30 p.m., and sixth-seeded Lathrop takes on third-seeded North Pole at 3:30 p.m. Seventh-seeded Eielson and second-seeded Delta Junction meet at 7:30 p.m. to wrap up the tournament’s first day.

Top-seeded and defending tournament champion West Valley plays the Hutchison-Monroe Catholic winner in a semifinal at 3 p.m. Friday. The winners of the Lathrop-North Pole and Eielson-Delta Junction matchups take the field for the other semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday.

The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday. Both finalists advance to the Alaska School Activities Association/First National Bank Alaska Baseball State Championships on May 30-June 1 at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.
