The American Volleyball Coaches Association awarded the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team the AVCA Team Academic Award for its academic excellence in the 2018-19 season.
The team last won the award in 2012 and was one of 141 NCAA Division II programs and one of 11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools to be recognized for its academic success this past season. The Nanooks made themselves eligible for the nomination by maintaining a 3.3 cumulative team GPA.
“I think awards like this are a real tribute to the team and the effort and hard work they put in to being a great student-athlete here at UAF,” head volleyball coach Brian Scott said on Thursday. “It takes a lot of discipline to be successful in school, while meeting the training and traveling demands of a student-athlete, even more so in Alaska with the very intense travel schedule.”
The team kicks off preseason action for the 2019 season on Aug. 23 with their annual Blue vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage at the Alaska Airlines Court.
