The Mid Alaska Conference champion Lathrop Malemutes are represented by 22 boys and eight girls participants, as the qualifiers for the Alaska School Activities Association/First National Bank Alaska Wrestling State Championships were announced Tuesday.
Totals includes wrestlers who received at-large berths to the state tournaments.
The state tournaments for Division I boys, Division II and combined Division I and II girls, take place Friday and Saturday in the Alaska Airlines Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Competition begins at 9 a.m. each day.
Semifinals take place at 5 p.m. Friday and championship matches are slated to start at the same time Saturday.
The MAC and Denali Conference boys regional tournaments and a girls regional tournament with wrestlers from both conferences took place on the Coach T Court at Lathrop High School on Friday and Saturday.
The top three finishers in each weight class of the MAC boys regional advanced to the Division I boys state tournament. The top two wrestlers in the Denali boys regional advanced to the Division II boys state tournament, and the top two finishers in the combined girls regional at Lathrop advanced to the state girls tournament.
Lathrop, the West Valley Wolfpack and the North Pole Patriots are participating in the Division I boys state tournament. West Valley has 12 boys and North Pole nine in the Division I competition.
The Glennallen Panthers, the Denali Conference boys team champions, are represented by 10 wrestlers in the Division II state tournament. The Denali runners-up Eielson Ravens are represented by nine.
In the girls state tournament, Lathrop will be represented by eight competitors and North Pole will be represented by seven.
A combined seven boys and girls wrestlers from the MAC and Denali boys regionals and the combined girls regionals are seeded first in their weight classes in their respective state tournaments.
The Division II boys state tournament has four top seeds from the Denali regional — Glennallen teammates Alex Buck (130 pounds), Aengus Bancroft (145) and Kael Gerlach (189) and Eielson’s Joshua Baird (140).
Bancroft captured the 145-pound state title last year.
North Pole’s Elizabeth Schumaker, who’s aiming for her third straight state title, is seeded first in the 112-pound class of the combined girls state tournament. Eielson’s Debranna Bealer, who captured the 235-pound state title last year as a freshman, is seeded first in the weight class for this year’s tournament.
Lathrop’s Kobe Ames is the top seed in the 145-pound class of the Division I boys state tournament. Malemutes teammate Jeremy Bockert won the 103-pound state last year and is seeding third this year in the 119-pound class.
The state qualifiers from the MAC and Denali boys regionals and the combined girls regionals are listed on the Scoreboard on Page B2.
