FAIRBANKS — Local rinks skipped by Matt Birklid and Vicky Persinger will represent Alaska when the Fairbanks Curling Club hosts the USA Curling Junior National Championships in late January.
The Birklid and Persinger rinks earned their spots in the national championships by winning the best-of-three Alaska Junior State playdowns last month in Fairbanks.
Members of the Birklid rink include Atticus Wallace, Oliver Halvarson, Ryan Flippo and Quinn Evenson.
Curling with Vicky Persinger are Tina Persinger, Meredith Hazen and Caitlin Fowler.
The National Championships run Jan. 29-Feb. 5, featuring the best junior teams in the nation. The winning men’s and women’s rinks move on to represent the United States at the Junior World Championships in Perth, Scotland in March.
The Alaska Skijoring and Pulk Association will host a trail tour at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Skijorers should meet on Waterford Road, a right turn off Goldstream Road about 3.5 miles from the Steese Highway.
The trailhead is before Waterford turns into Molly Road. Participants should park on Molly Road in the pullout around the corner from the trailhead.
The trail has some fairly steep section. Organizers said it’s a good trail for one dog. Beginners are advised to ski the trail first without a dog.
Connections to the pipeline and other trails make this route as long or as short a tour as participants want. There is some debris in the snow from the rainstorm, so participants are advised to leave their best skis at home.
If the temperature at 458-3745 (ext. 1113) is colder than 10 below at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, the event will be canceled.
The trail tour is free for ASPA members and $5 for non-members.
