The Lathrop Malemutes basketball teams opened Mid Alaska Conference play with sweeps of the North Pole Patriots in a doubleheader Tuesday night in the Dan McHenry Gymnasium at North Pole High School.

The Malemutes boys soared to an 83-13 win and the Lathrop girls emerged with a 70-21 win.

Lathrop was aided by a balanced attack as all 12 of its players scored.

Statistics for either team were not reported but Lathrop head coach Matt Wilken said in a text that he estimated five Malemutes scored in double figures.

In the girls contest, Ella Roberts scored a game-high 22 points and TT Tagovailoa contributed 10 points for the Malemutes.

Alicia Guzman led the Patriots with eight points and Claire Richmond scored six.

The Lathrop and North Pole girls teams are among eight squads participating in the second annual West Valley Ice Jam on Thursday through Saturday at West Valley High School.


Hutch-Delta hockey canceled

Tuesday’s scheduled Aurora Conference hockey game between the Hutchison Hawks and host Delta Junction Huskies was canceled because of extreme cold.

Huskies head coach Andy Hudgin said the temperature in Delta Junction was 25 below earlier Tuesday and was down to 30 below around 8:40 p.m.

Hudgin said the game is scheduled to made up but no time and date have yet been determined.
