FAIRBANKS— Aliy Zirkle, the runner-up in the last three Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Races, has entered the 50-mile event of the Solstice 50/100, which starts this morning from the Pleasant Valley Store, 23 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road.

Zirkle, of Two Rivers, was the only entry Friday in the shorter race, but more registration is scheduled for 9 this morning at the store.

Twelve mushers had signed up for the 100-mile race, and among the entries is Fairbanks’ Lance Mackey, a four-time winner of Iditarod and the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

Also, the Gin Gin 200 began at 6 Friday night from the Meiers Lake Roadhouse at 171 Mile Richardson Highway near Glennallen.

Forty-two teams had entered, but 39 started the race that goes out and back from the roadhouse to the Alpine Creek Lodge, 68 Mile Denali Highway near Cantwell. 

According to information from the Meiers Lake Roadhouse, the first musher was expected at the Alpine Creek Lodge at 4 a.m. today.
