Nathan Reid, who was the Fairbanks Ice Dogs’ starting goaltender early last season before being sidelined by an injury, verbally committed to the NCAA Division I hockey program at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

Ice Dogs head coach Trevor Stewart, by phone Tuesday, said Reid made the commitment two weeks ago.

Reid, a 19-year-old  native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, is playing this season with the Sioux City (Iowa) Musketeers of the United States Hockey League, a Tier I junior A league. The Ice Dogs are members of the North American Hockey League, a Tier II junior A league.

Reid was selected by Sioux City in the 16th round and 241st overall in Phase II of the USHL Draft in May.

The 6-foot-2 and 180-pound netminder played in 32 games for the Ice Dogs, compiling a 17-12-3 record with a .907 saves percentage, 2.37 goals against average and five shutouts.

“It was a different sort of year for Nate,’’ Stewart said. “He was definitely going to be our guy heading into the season. He started, he did a really good job and he continued to get better.”

Reid sustained an injury in December.

“It allowed opportunities for other people (goaltenders) and he understood that, and he was a good teammate,’’ Stewart recalled.

“We couldn’t be more proud of him. He will be going to college and playing hockey for a prestigious school like Yale.”

The Bulldogs are a member of Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Yale assistant coach Josh Siembida and Stewart were teammates with the USHL’s Waterloo (Iowa) Black Hawks in 2001-02.

“They (Yale coaches) like his (Reid’s) size and athleticism, and his potential as a goalie’’ Stewart said. “ He’s only going to get better as time goes along.”
